Rugged operational communications

Rugged devices built for Push-to-talk and critical communication

RugGear manufactures rugged Android devices built for frontline operational teams who require reliable, durable communications hardware in demanding environments. Unlike standard consumer smartphones, RugGear devices are engineered to withstand the physical and environmental conditions encountered across aviation ground operations, construction sites, logistics hubs and industrial facilities.

RugGear devices are widely deployed as hardware endpoints within Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) deployments, operating alongside platforms such as Zello and Hytera HyTalk. These platforms deliver group voice communications, dispatch functionality and operational messaging across cellular (4G/LTE, 5G) and Wi-Fi networks — replacing or supplementing traditional licensed radio infrastructure.

Why rugged PoC devices for operational communications

Standard smartphones are not designed for the physical and operational demands of frontline work environments. Rugged PoC devices address
the specific requirements of shift-based, high-noise and physically demanding operations.

Dedicated Push-to-Talk Button

A physical PTT button allows immediate voice transmission
without navigating touchscreen menus - critical in time sensitive operational situations. Reduces errors and delays in active coordination scenarios.

Glove-friendly operation

Touchscreens on RugGear devices are engineered to respond to gloved hands, wet fingers and stylus input - enabling full operability without removing personal protective equipment.

Long battery life for shift work

High-capacity batteries support full operational shifts - typically 10 to 12 hours - without requiring mid-shift recharging. Reduces device downtime and eliminates the need for carrying spare power banks.

High audio output

Loud, clear audio is essential on construction sites, airside ramps and industrial floors where ambient noise levels frequently exceed 90 dB. RugGear devices deliver audio output capable of cutting through background noise without additional accessories.

IP-Rated Rugged Construction

Devices carry IP68 ingress protection ratings and are MIL-STD- 810 tested for drop resistance, vibration and temperature extremes. Built to withstand the working life of a frontline operational device, not a consumer handset.

Workforce application integration

Running Android, RugGear devices support deployment of
workforce applications alongside PoC software - including task management, inspection tools, digital forms and operational reporting platforms - consolidating multiple carried devices into one.

USE CASE

Aviation ground operations

Aviation ground handling is one of the more demanding operational communications environments - time-critical, high-noise, and requiring coordination across multiple teams and functions simultaneously.

Many aviation operators deploy RugGear devices alongside PoC platforms such as Zello to extend communications across airside operations
without expanding licensed radio infrastructure.

Baggage Handling Teams

Baggage teams require instant PTT communication with supervisors and loading coordinators during turnaround windows. A rugged device with a physical PTT button and loud speaker output supports coordination without removing PPE or handling fragile consumer handsets.

Airside maintenance teams

Maintenance technicians operating airside require devices that withstand jet blast, ground vehicle vibration, fuel and hydraulic fluid exposure. IP68 and MIL-STD-810 rated devices provide the durability required without additional cases or protective housings.

Aircraft turnaround operations

Turnaround coordinators managing fuelling, catering, cleaning and technical checks require a single device capable of voice communications across multiple groups, access to operational checklists and real-time reporting to the operations control centre.

Control Room Coordination

PoC platforms allow ground teams to communicate directly with operations control rooms using the same group communication infrastructure. Dispatch functionality and status messaging provide supervisors with real-time visibility of team activities across the airfield.

Example Deployment

A regional airport ground handling operator deployed RugGear devices with a PoC platform to replace a combination of licensed radios and personal mobile phones across baggage, turnaround and airside operations teams.
The deployment consolidated communications onto a single platform, reduced the number of carried devices per operative, and extended operational coverage using existing 4G network infrastructure.
