Guide · PoC radio explained

What is a PoC radio?

PoC stands for Push-to-Talk over Cellular. A PoC radio or device uses mobile data and/or Wi-Fi rather than a traditional private radio frequency network to provide push-to-talk group communications over a wider geographic area.

How PoC works

One-button group voice delivered over IP connectivity.

01 · Device

Smartphone or radio-style hardware

Users can communicate from compatible smartphones, rugged devices or dedicated PoC handsets depending on the platform.

02 · Network

4G, 5G or Wi-Fi

Communication depends on suitable IP connectivity rather than the coverage footprint of a local DMR repeater network.

03 · Platform

Channels and dispatch

The PoC platform manages users, groups, channels and supported dispatch workflows.

PoC radio or DMR?

PoC can suit distributed teams that already have reliable cellular or Wi-Fi coverage and need wide-area communication. DMR can suit local or complex sites where a dedicated radio system and independently engineered coverage are more appropriate. The right choice depends on geography, resilience, coverage and operating model.

PoC radio explained

When is PoC a better fit than conventional two-way radio?

PoC radio is strongest when teams are spread across multiple sites or wide geographic areas and already have reliable 4G, 5G or Wi-Fi coverage. Conventional DMR remains valuable where local radio resilience, dedicated infrastructure or site-specific coverage is the priority.

PoC

Wide-area and multi-site teams

Cellular networks remove the need to build a repeater network across every location and can connect mobile users over much larger distances.

DMR

Local radio infrastructure

DMR can suit sites that need dedicated local communications, controlled coverage and operation independent of public cellular service.

Selection

Coverage comes first

Choose around where users work, resilience requirements, dispatch needs, device type and the communications workflow.
